Born in Toronto (Ontario) in 1954, Doug Back now resides in Norwood (Ontario). Back’s work entails kinetic, robotic, and visual media elements that combine to explore technology’s effect on the body. As founding member of the YYZ Gallery and InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre in Toronto (Ontario), Back was actively engaged in the establishment of Toronto as a mecca for early electronic media art. His artworks have been exhibited across Canada as well as in Austria, Mexico, the United States, The Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden. Currently a professor of Integrated Media at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, Back continues to teach the physical computing approach to art practice he developed with Norman White in the 1980s. Back received the Petro-Canada Award in Media Arts from the Canada Council for the Arts in 1987.
