Catherine Richards considers herself an artist working in old and new media. Her work explores the effects of new technologies on subjectivity as body boundaries are increasingly transgressed through their means. Her work has been shown across Canada and internationally included in such exhibitions as The Biennale of Sydney (2004) in Sydney (Australia), Resonance: The Electromagnetic Bodies Project (2005) at Oboro in Montreal (Quebec) and ZKM in Karlsruhe (Germany). In 2000 the Ottawa Art Gallery (Ottawa, Ontario) mounted a survey exhibition of Richards intensive work from the 1990s entitled Excitable Tissues that, to quote Frances Dyson, looked at “the interplay of the body within and between the promise and the threat of new technology.”
