Yvonne Spielmann (Ph.D.)

Researcher in Residence (2003)

The Vasulkas: From Image to Object in Electronic Media

Workshops with Yvonne Spielmann: The experimental video work of the Vasulkas
Yvonne Spielmann, who holds a doctorate degree, teaches visual media at the Braunschweig School of Art in Braunschweig, Germany, and now at the University of the West of Scotland (Beech Grove, Scotland, U.K.). She is particularly interested in artists like Michael Snow, Steina, and Bill Seaman who formalize their work through machines or instruments.

Her residency at the Centre for Research and Documentation (CR+D) will enable her to search the Steina and Woody Vasulka fonds using such notions as intermediality, hypermedia and hybridization. This work complements research she is conducting with André Gaudreault, who teaches in the art history and film studies department at the Université de Montréal and directs the intermediality research centre. Her research will be used to add comments and notes to the Foundation's Web pages devoted to works by the Vasulkas.
