Photographic Documents. - 1964-1990. - 512 b&w. and col. photographic prints, various formats, 20 x 26 cm. and under, 7 b&w. negatives, 35 mm.

Scope and content:

This series consists of photographic prints and a few negatives from various sources related to the professional activities and personal lives of Steina and Woody Vasulka from 1963 to 1993.

The photographic documents are organized into theme files that contain, for example, images of Steina and Woody Vasulka in Prague and Iceland in the mid-sixties; studio photographs showing the couple in their work environment in New York, Buffalo and Sante Fe, surrounded by the instruments used at the time to conduct their research into electronic imagery; and several prints showing collaborators and friends at different moments in Steina and Woody Vasulka's career. The series documents a few significant works, including installations from the seventies and eighties, as well as images taken at the shooting stage and stills from videotapes produced from 1972 to 1989. Often these images were used in the press or published in catalogues, periodical articles and other documents.

Two sets of photographs illustrate the set-up of and works shown in the exhibitions Vasulka: Steina - Machine Vision/Woody - Descriptions at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo, N.Y., United States) in 1978, and Steina et Woody Vasulka, vidéastes : 1969-1984 : 15 années d'images électroniques, analogiques et numériques at CINE-MBXA (Paris, France).
