Scope and content:
In 1990, at the invitation of Peter Weibel, who then headed up the Ars Electronica Center (Linz, Austria), Steina and Woody Vasulka began organizing
Eigenwelt der Apparatewelt: Pioniere der Elektronischen Kunst = Pioneers of Electronic Art, an event to be held within the 1992
Ars Electronica festival in Linz, Austria. Mainly showcasing original devices still in working order, the exhibition explored the use that artists made of such instruments when a formal vocabulary specific to video was being defined.
As well as chronicling the design stages of the exhibition, this series provides information about a pivotal period in the sixties and seventies when artists and engineers were developing technological components to broaden the range of televisual imagery.
Assembled by Steina and Woody Vasulka over the course of their career or collected during their research, the files gathered in this series contain administrative correspondence, biographical notes, technical data sheets and drawings, patents, instruction manuals and certain manuscripts and reports by the designers dealing with technical aspects of how the devices operated or describing the effects these devices produced. The series also includes files on pioneer artists in electronic art whose work represents an example of the use of these technological components for aesthetic exploration.
